The Land Rover Tax Advantage
Upgrade your company vehicle and take advantage of immediate Year-1 depreciation tax deductions on eligible Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery models. Here is how the heavy SUV rules work, which models qualify, and what a first-year deduction can look like.
Which Land Rover Models Qualify?
The Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Defender (90, 110, 130) and Discovery all have Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings over 6,000 pounds, so they qualify as heavy SUVs when used for business.
Instead of depreciating the vehicle over 5+ years, a business can deduct a large share of its cost in Year 1 through Section 179 (up to $32,000 for heavy SUVs in 2026) and Section 168(k) bonus depreciation on the remaining cost. The vehicle must be purchased and placed in service in 2026.
How the Tax Advantage Works
Under federal tax rules, vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 6,000 pounds that are used for business qualify for accelerated depreciation. Rather than depreciating a luxury vehicle over five or more years, businesses can write off a significant portion of its cost in the first year. Two provisions work together:
- Section 179 lets a business expense the cost of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service. For heavy SUVs (6,001 to 14,000 lbs GVWR), the Section 179 amount is capped at $32,000 for tax years beginning in 2026.
- Section 168(k) bonus depreciation can be applied to the cost remaining after Section 179. With 100% bonus depreciation available for qualifying property in 2026, that remainder can also be deducted in Year 1.
- Business use matters. The vehicle generally must be used more than 50% for business, and the deduction is limited to the business-use percentage.
What is GVWR? Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the manufacturer's rating of the vehicle's maximum weight when fully loaded with people and cargo. Land Rover models with a GVWR of more than 6,000 pounds are classified as "heavy SUVs." GVWR is not the same as the vehicle's empty (curb) weight.
Eligible Land Rover Models
JLR identifies four nameplates with a GVWR above 6,000 pounds.
Range Rover
GVWR over 6,000 lbs. The flagship luxury SUV.
Range Rover Sport
GVWR over 6,000 lbs. Performance-focused Range Rover.
Defender 90, 110 & 130

2026 First-Year Deduction Example
The same $90,525 purchase produces a very different first-year deduction depending on whether the vehicle is over or under 6,000 lbs GVWR.
| Depreciation Example | Heavy SUV (GVWR 6,001–14,000 lbs) | Passenger Auto (GVWR 6,000 lbs or less) |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | $90,525 | $90,525 |
| Section 179 – first year | $32,000 | Limited by §280F caps |
| Bonus depreciation (100% scenario) | $58,525 | N/A (caps control total) |
| Total first-year deduction | $90,525 | $20,300 |
Illustrative example only, assuming 100% business use and a vehicle purchased and placed in service in 2026. Figures reflect the 2026 heavy SUV Section 179 limit ($32,000, IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the 2026 first-year passenger automobile limit with bonus depreciation ($20,300, IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-15). Your results will vary. Who the Tax Advantage Is For
Small Business Owners
Owners who use a vehicle for client visits, job sites or travel between business locations and want to lower their 2026 tax bill.
LLCs & Practices
Consultants, medical and legal practices, real estate professionals and other firms that buy vehicles through the business.
Fleets
Companies adding or replacing several vehicles, where heavy SUV treatment can apply to each qualifying vehicle placed in service.
California Businesses
California does not follow federal bonus depreciation and limits Section 179 to $25,000, so your state deduction will usually be smaller. Plan both with your tax professional.
How to Act Before Year-End
Because the vehicle must be purchased and placed in service in 2026, timing matters.
- Talk to your tax professional about your business-use percentage, income and whether purchasing or leasing fits your situation.
- Choose an eligible model.Browse new Land Rover inventory and confirm the GVWR of the vehicle you select.
- Line up financing. Financed purchases can still qualify. Apply for financing online and see current Land Rover offers.
- Take delivery before December 31, 2026. The vehicle must be purchased and placed in service in 2026 to count for the 2026 tax year.
Your Questions Answered
Which Land Rover models qualify for the tax advantage?
Per JLR, the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Defender (90, 110 and 130) and Discovery have Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings over 6,000 pounds, so they can be depreciated as heavy SUVs under federal and state law when used for business.
Does the vehicle have to be purchased in 2026?
Yes. To claim the deduction on a 2026 tax return, the vehicle must be purchased and placed in service in 2026. Placed in service generally means the vehicle is delivered and ready for business use.
Can I write off the entire purchase price in the first year?
Possibly. In the example on this page, a $90,525 heavy SUV used 100% for business could combine a $32,000 Section 179 deduction with $58,525 of bonus depreciation for a $90,525 first-year deduction. Your actual result depends on business-use percentage, income and other factors, so confirm with your tax professional.
Is the California deduction the same as the federal deduction?
No. California does not follow federal bonus depreciation and limits Section 179 expensing to $25,000, so the state deduction is typically smaller than the federal one. Ask your tax professional how this affects your state return.
Does financing or leasing affect eligibility?
Section 179 and bonus depreciation apply to vehicles your business purchases, including financed purchases. Leased vehicles are generally treated differently. Your tax professional can tell you which structure works best for your business.
